Lord’s Day Message

Bible Verses: 2 Thessalonians Chap 2

Topics: Not to be deceived on the matter of Lord’s coming back

Important Verses:

“We ask you, brothers, not to be quickly shaken in mind or alarmed, either by a spirit or a spoken word, or a letter seeming to be from us, to the effect that the day of the Lord has come. Let no one deceive you in any way. For that day will not come, unless the rebellion comes first, and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the son of destruction,” (2 Thess. 2:1b~3, ESV)

“So then, brothers, stand firm and hold to the traditions that you were taught by us, either by our spoken word or by our letter. Now may our Lord Jesus Christ himself, and God our Father, who loved us and gave us eternal comfort and good hope through grace, comfort your hearts and establish them in every good work and word.” (2 Thess. 2:15~17)

Message Outline

In this chapter Paul reminds the saints not to be shaken or deceived if someone says the Lord has come back. He talks about the things which will happen before and during the Lord’s coming back as well as what the anti-Christ (the man of lawlessness, the son of destruction) will do. In the end he encourages the saints to stand firm and keep the teaching of the gospel.

  1. Not to be shaken, alarmed, or deceived

For two thousand years many Christians have been deceived on the matter of the Lord’s coming back. We need to ask what the reason is. People are easily deceived by two matters, one is what we desire and the second is what we are afraid of.

  • What we desire

Lord Jesus has asked two disciples of John, “What are you seeking?” (Jn 1:38) Today we also need to ask ourselves the same question. What do we seek from God?

There is no doubt that God is full of grace and supply, however, if we only want something from God and not relate ourselves to God, and then we will be easily to be deceived.

  • What we are afraid of

Many people are afraid of things of unknown and things of judgment, but Lord Jesus reminds us to fear God only (Mat. 10:28). On the other hand, if we really know truth, then we will have assurance of salvation and will treasure the moving of the Spirit, the grace of the Lord and the love of God.

2.  Stand firm

  • In this section Paul mentions the truth of the gospel in a simple way to help the saints understand the assurance of the gospel and encourages them to stand firm.
  • Our salvation is through our faith; however, it is also based on the God’s choosing and the Spirit’s sanctifying.
  • The call of the gospel is to make us have the glory of Lord Jesus Christ. This is the goal of our salvation which we should not stray away.
  • We need the teachings of the apostles, which will help us not to be deceived.
  • Facing all the difficulties and lies, we need to be assured about God’s love, grace, comforts and hope. Then we need to establish our hearts in every good work and word.
