Lord’s Day Message
Topics: Exhorting regarding the Christian Living
Bible Verses: 1 Thess. 5:12~5:27
Important Verses:
“We ask you, brothers, to respect those who labor among you and are over you in the Lord and admonish you, and to esteem them very highly in love because of their work. Be at peace among yourselves. And we urge you, brothers, admonish the idle, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, be patient with them all.” (1 Thess. 5:12~14, ESV)
“Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. Do not quench the Spirit. Do not despise prophecies, but test everything; hold fast what is good. Abstain from every form of evil.” (1 Thess. 5:16~22)
“Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. He who calls you is faithful; he will surely do it.” (1 Thess. 5:23~24)
Message Outline:
In the last section of this epistle, Paul mentions some important things in regards to the living in the church life. This is to help the saints support each other and to be kept by God in a healthy spiritual life.
- The positive interaction with the serving ones in the church life
a. Respect the serving ones in the church life and esteem them in love
No one is prefect and always right in the serving; however, when the serving ones labour, lead and admonish us our response should be positive.
b. The contents of serving
- Labour. This indicates a harsh work which needs some diligence and sacrifices of time and even the self.
- To lead in the Lord. This is similar to being a head sheep, who will walk in the front to seek the pasture as well as to escape the dangerous place. The true leading is not an enjoyment of power but a bearing of responsibility.
- Admonishment. Today people are all self-centered and are not easy to accept admonishment from others. However, this is most needed for our growth in life.
- Admonishment, encouragement, help, and patience. We are very easily trapped in some negative situations because we are corrupted and weak in our flesh and nature. This is why we need all kinds of support to bring us back to positive and healthy situations.
2. To keep oneself in a healthy spiritual conditions
- Rejoice always. This should be our testimony as well as a measurement of our spiritual condition. If we lost our joy, then we need to ask whether we have sinned and offend God, or we have done something that He dislikes. Then we need to ask for His forgiveness and come back into His light.
- Pray without ceasing. This is to have a close relationship with the Lord at any time and at any place.
- Give thanks in all circumstances. For this we must learn to have a view that the Lord has arranged the best for us in all circumstances that we can be benefitted from them.
- Do not quench the Spirit. The Spirit lives in us and will move in us to enlighten us and to supply grace to us. Sometimes we may not understand His move, however, we need to learn to yield and do not suppress His moving.
- Do not despise prophecies. God speaks not only through the Spirit but also through prophets, who speak for God. May we all have the ear to hear and have a tender heart to receive God’s speaking.
- Test everything. This indicates a heart of seeking, which is willing to know what God likes and hates.
