Bible Verses: Col.1:1~14
Important Verses:
“And so, from the day we heard, we have not ceased to pray for you, asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, so as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God.” (Col. 1:9~10, ESV)
“Giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in light. He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.” (Col. 1:12~14)
Message Outline
Dealing with the problems of the church in Colossae, Paul first helped the saints to know what they had from the salvation. This will guide them into a proper pursuing and living.
1. The salvation from God(12~14)
a. Share in the inheritance of the saints in light
b. Delivers us from the domain of darkness and transfers us to the kingdom of his beloved Son
c. In the beloved Son we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins
2. The experience of faith, love and hope(4~5)
a. This is the foundation of Christian living and the content of the gospel.
The faith in Christ Jesus, which make us have trust and union with Him
b. The love toward the saints
The faith in Christ Jesus will also bring us into union with the saints. Such union is expressed in love.
c. The hope in the heaven
Hope will control our goal, attitude, and behavior in our living. The true hope is not for the reward itself, but is longing for a deeper union with Christ.
3. The pursuing and living for Christians (9~11)
a. Our pursuing – to be filled with the knowledge of God’s will (9)
What we need to pursue is to know the plan and economy of God, as well as the work and accomplishment of Christ for us.
This requires spiritual wisdom and understanding. In contrast, human philosophy, empty deceit, tradition, and the elements of the world (2:8) are all useless.
b. Our living is to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord and to please Him (10)
Our living is not to be bounded by any religious regulations or practices (2:14, 16) , yet we should live in a manner worthy of the salvation we receive and to please the Lord.
Such living will help us to bear fruits -to testify the divine life in us, and to help us grow by the full knowledge of God.
Such living also requires us to be empowered with all power according to the might of God’s glory (11). The strength in our living is solely from God.
