Lord’s Day Message: Ephesians 1:15-23

15  For this reason, because I have heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love toward all the saints, 16  I do not cease to give thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers, 17  that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you a spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of him, 18  having the eyes of your hearts enlightened, that you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, 19  and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power toward us who believe, according to the working of his great might 20  that he worked in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places, 21  far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come. 22  And he put all things under his feet and gave him as head over all things to the church, 23  which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all.

Message Outline: The First Prayer of Paul for Ephesians

  • The motivation of the prayer
  1. Seeing the greatness of God’s eternal will in Christ and work toward the believers
  2. Hearing the faith and love of the saints
  3. Hoping the saints desire to know God more so that they eventually cen become the expression (the body) of Christ
  • The content of the prayer – giving thanks to God and asking Him to give us a spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the full knowledge of Him
  1. Knowing the hope of His calling
  2. Knowing the riches of His glorious inheritance in the saints
  3. Knowing the immeasurable greatness of His power toward the believers
  • The great might that God worked in Christ
  1. It is the power of resurrection, power of ascension, and power of dominion
  2. Today Christ also transmits the same power to the church that the church, His body, can become His bountiful expression
  • Our application and discussion
  1. How can we learn so that Paul’s prayer can become our prayer? For example

Learning to know, to appreciate and to give thanks to whatever the work of grace God has done upon us
Learning to pray for the saints when we hear their situation
Learning to confess that we are incapable to  know God, yet we desire His given spirit of wisdom and revelation to know Him

2. What are three things that the spirit of wisdom and of revelation can help us to know? What are these related to our church life?

3.  What kind of power has God given to Christ? Can we experience the same power? Please chare your experience of feeling.
