Lord’s Day Message:Galatians – overview
- The background – a different gospel affecting the churches in Galatia
6 I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting him who called you in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel– 7 not that there is another one, but there are some who trouble you and want to distort the gospel of Christ. (1:6-7)
- What is this different gospel? – circumcision and works of the law
3 But even Titus, who was with me, was not forced to be circumcised, though he was a Greek. 4 Yet because of false brothers secretly brought in–who slipped in to spy out our freedom that we have in Christ Jesus, so that they might bring us into slavery– 5 to them we did not yield in submission even for a moment, so that the truth of the gospel might be preserved for you. (2:3-5)
1 O foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you? It was before your eyes that Jesus Christ was publicly portrayed as crucified. 2 Let me ask you only this: Did you receive the Spirit by works of the law or by hearing with faith? 3 Are you so foolish? Having begun by the Spirit, are you now being perfected by the flesh? (3:1-3)
- Why does it matter?
a. it separates us from Christ and grace
2 Look: I, Paul, say to you that if you accept circumcision, Christ will be of no advantage to you. 3 I testify again to every man who accepts circumcision that he is obligated to keep the whole law. 4 You are severed from Christ, you who would be justified by the law; you have fallen away from grace. (5:2-4)
b. It makes men boast, though lacking any spiritual reality
12 It is those who want to make a good showing in the flesh who would force you to be circumcised, and only in order that they may not be persecuted for the cross of Christ. 13 For even those who are circumcised do not themselves keep the law, but they desire to have you circumcised that they may boast in your flesh. (6:12-13)
- The real gospel
- We are justified by faith only
yet we know that a person is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, so we also have believed in Christ Jesus, in order to be justified by faith in Christ and not by works of the law, because by works of the law no one will be justified. (2:16)
Now it is evident that no one is justified before God by the law, for “The righteous shall live by faith.” (3:11)
- The salvation of the cross –
a. For Christ – who died for our sin
3 … the Lord Jesus Christ, 4 who gave himself for our sins to deliver us from the present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father. (1:3b-4)
b. For us – to be crucified with Christ
I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. (2:20)
c. For the world – make the separation
But far be it from me to boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. (6:14)
- The Spirit
a. Who gives us the spiritual beginning and perfects us continuously (3:2-3)
b. Who makes us sons of God
And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!” (4:6)
c. We live by Him and walk by Him
16 But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. … 25 If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit. (5:16. 25)
- Our application
- Today we may not pay attention to circumcision or OT regulations; however, we do have our standards for being a Christian. How can we prevent these requirements from carrying us away from Christ and His grace? Or in a different view, how can we trust in Christ and receive more of His grace under these requirements?
- Do you see that the works of the cross are more than what people usually think? Can you see the value of us dying with Him and being separated from the world through the cross?
- How can we experience the works of the Spirit in our daily living? How can we receive His perfecting and walk by Him?
