Lord’s Day Message: Basic Lessons for Christians (13) – The family life of Christians (2) – Parents and Children
- Family of faith
I am reminded of your sincere faith, a faith that dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and now, I am sure, dwells in you as well. (2Tim.1:5)
- Parents
- Children are a heritage from God
3 Behold, children are a heritage from the LORD, the fruit of the womb a reward. (Psm.127:3)
- How to raise up children
a. In your prayer, give them to God’s hand
22 And when the time came for their purification according to the Law of Moses, they brought him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord 23 (as it is written in the Law of the Lord, “Every male who first opens the womb shall be called holy to the Lord”) (Luk.2:22-23)
b. Teach them God’s words
18 “You shall therefore lay up these words of mine in your heart and in your soul, and you shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. 19 You shall teach them to your children, talking of them when you are sitting in your house, and when you are walking by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. 20 You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates, 21 that your days and the days of your children may be multiplied in the land that the LORD swore to your fathers to give them, as long as the heavens are above the earth. (Deu.11:18-21)
c. Share with them your experience of salvation
20 “When your son asks you in time to come, ‘What is the meaning of the testimonies and the statutes and the rules that the LORD our God has commanded you?’ 21 then you shall say to your son, ‘We were Pharaoh’s slaves in Egypt. And the LORD brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand. 22 And the LORD showed signs and wonders, great and grievous, against Egypt and against Pharaoh and all his household, before our eyes. 23 And he brought us out from there, that he might bring us in and give us the land that he swore to give to our fathers. 24 And the LORD commanded us to do all these statutes, to fear the LORD our God, for our good always, that he might preserve us alive, as we are this day. 25 And it will be righteousness for us, if we are careful to do all this commandment before the LORD our God, as he has commanded us.’ (Deu.6:20-25)
- Discipline them, yet do not discourage them
Discipline your son, for there is hope; do not set your heart on putting him to death. (Prov.19:18)
Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord. (Eph.6:4)
Fathers, do not provoke your children, lest they become discouraged. (Col.3:21)
- Learn from the example of God’s discipline upon us
9 Besides this, we have had earthly fathers who disciplined us and we respected them. Shall we not much more be subject to the Father of spirits and live? 10 For they disciplined us for a short time as it seemed best to them, but he disciplines us for our good, that we may share his holiness. (Heb.12:5-10)
- Be their pattern
But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it (2Tim.3:14)
- Children
- Honor and obey your parents
Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the LORD your God is giving you. (Exo.20:12)
1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 2 “Honor your father and mother” (this is the first commandment with a promise), 3 “that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land.” (Eph.6:1-3)
Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord. (Col.3:20)
- Jesus as the example
48 … And his mother said to him, “Son, why have you treated us so? Behold, your father and I have been searching for you in great distress.” 49 And he said to them, “Why were you looking for me? Did you not know that I must be in my Father’s house?” 50 And they did not understand the saying that he spoke to them. 51 And he went down with them and came to Nazareth and was submissive to them. … (Luk.2:48-51)
- Receive parents’ discipline
A fool despises his father’s instruction, but whoever heeds reproof is prudent. (Prov.15:5)
For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it. (Heb.12:11)
