Lord’s Day Message:

Basic Lessons for Christians (6) – Knowing Triune God and guarding against the teaching of heresy

  1. There is only one God (1Cor.8:4b; Isa.45:5a)

… we know that “an idol has no real existence,” and that “there is no God but one.” (1Cor.8:4b)

I am the LORD, and there is no other, besides me there is no God; … (Isa.45:5a)

2.   “Triune God” does not appear in the Bible, but the concept does (Mat.28:19; 2Cor.13:14)

Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, (Mat.28:19)

The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all. (2Cor.1:14)

3. The work of the Triune God – to accomplish salvation (Eph.1:3-14) God is triune which is beyond the comprehension of human wisdom. However, from the Bible we know that only through the work of the Triune God we can receive the complete salvation.

3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, 4 even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love 5 he predestined us for adoption as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will, 6 to the praise of his glorious grace, with which he has blessed us in the Beloved.

7 In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace, 8 which he lavished upon us, in all wisdom and insight 9 making known to us the mystery of his will, according to his purpose, which he set forth in Christ 10 as a plan for the fullness of time, to unite all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth. 11 In him we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will, 12 so that we who were the first to hope in Christ might be to the praise of his glory.

13 In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, 14 who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory.  (Eph. 1:3-14)

4. Knowing that Jesus Christ is God (Heb.1:8; Rom.9:5; John1:1, 14)

But of the Son he says, “Your throne, O God, is forever and ever, the scepter of uprightness is the scepter of your kingdom.  (Heb.1:8)

To them belong the patriarchs, and from their race, according to the flesh, is the Christ who is God over all, blessed forever. Amen.  (Rom.9:5)

1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. … 14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth. (John1:1, 14)

5. Recognizing the heresy and guarding against it  (Mat.24:4-5, 10-13; 1Tim.4:1-2; 2Pet.2:1-2; 2Jhn.7; Eph.4:13-14)

4 And Jesus answered them, “See that no one leads you astray. 5 For many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am the Christ,’ and they will lead many astray. … 10 And then many will fall away and betray one another and hate one another. 11 And many false prophets will arise and lead many astray. 12 And because lawlessness will be increased, the love of many will grow cold. 13 But the one who endures to the end will be saved.  (Mat.24:4-5, 10-13)

1 Now the Spirit expressly says that in later times some will depart from the faith by devoting themselves to deceitful spirits and teachings of demons, 2 through the insincerity of liars whose consciences are seared, (1Tim.4:1-2)

1 But false prophets also arose among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, bringing upon themselves swift destruction. 2 And many will follow their sensuality, and because of them the way of truth will be blasphemed.  (2Pet.2:1-2)

For many deceivers have gone out into the world, those who do not confess the coming of Jesus Christ in the flesh. Such a one is the deceiver and the antichrist. (2Jhn.7)

6.  Concerning some heresy and cults

  • Jehovah witness: not recognizing Jesus is God Himself
  • Mormon: human’s writing as Bible, false prophets
  • Eastern Thunder: declaring Christ has come

13 until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ, 14 so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes. (Eph.4:13-14)
