Lord’s Day Message:
Basic Lessons for Christians (5): Some principles of prayer
- Approach to God with sincerity, reverence and humility
- Tell Him what is true in our heart and what we really want because He knows (Psm. 62:8; Phil. 4:6-7; Mat. 6:8)
Trust in him at all times, O people; pour out your heart before him; God is a refuge for us. Selah (Psm. 62:8)
- When not knowing how to pray, we may begin with groaning, or calling on the Lord’s name to help us come back to our spirit to pray (Rom. 8:26-27; Lam. 3:55-57)
26 Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. 27 And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God. (Rom. 8:26-27)
55 “I called on your name, O LORD, from the depths of the pit; 56 you heard my plea, ‘Do not close your ear to my cry for help!’ 57 You came near when I called on you; you said, ‘Do not fear!’ (Lam. 3:55-57)
- In the beginning learn to deal with your sin first by confessing and partaking the Lord’s blood (Psm. 66:18; 1John 1:7; James 5:16; Heb. 10:19)
If I had cherished iniquity in my heart, the Lord would not have listened. (Psm. 66:18)
Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus, (Heb. 10:19)
- To pray in the Lord’s name (John 14:13-14, 16:24; 1John 5:14-15)
12 “Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father. 13 Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it. (John 14:12-14)
Until now you have asked nothing in my name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full. (John 16:24)
14 And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us. 15 And if we know that he hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests that we have asked of him. (1John 5:14-15)
a. “In the Lord’s name” should not be a ritual or meaning of God’s sure answer. It can be understood as in His will. It is what His heart desires and is consistent with His person.
b. It also shows that we recognize His will and not according to ours (Mat. 26:39)
And going a little farther he fell on his face and prayed, saying, “My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will.” (Mat. 26:39)
c. Such prayer can give Father glory and give us real joy
- We need to ask but do not ask wrongly (James 4:3)
2 …You do not have, because you do not ask. 3 You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, to spend it on your passions. (James 4:2b-3)
- Pray not only for yourself and also for others. It’s very good to join the prayer meeting and fight the spiritual warfare for the church. (Eph. 6:18)
praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints, (Eph. 6:18)
- Pray in the Spirit and work with the Spirit (Eph. 6:18; Phil. 1:19)
for I know that through your prayers and the help of the Spirit of Jesus Christ this will turn out for my deliverance, (Phil. 1:19)
9. Pray with faith by knowing our Lord is gracious and ready to help us (Mark 11:24; Heb. 4:16; Luke 11:10)
Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. (Heb. 4:16)
For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened. (Luke 11:10)
