Lord’s Day Message: Basic Lessons for Christians (4) Prayer – Fellowship with God
- What is prayer?
- A fellowship between man and God (1John 1:6-7)
6 If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. 7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. (1John 1:6-7)
a. We tell Him what we need or desire…
b. He answers us and shows us who He is, what He desires, and what He can do…
c. In such fellowship we come closer to Him, walk with Him, love Him, praise Him, and give thanks to Him.
d. After all we experience He is true and living God. (1Thes. 1:9b)
For they themselves report concerning us the kind of reception we had among you, and how you turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God, (1Thes. 1:9)
- Prayer is a spiritual breath so we can pray without ceasing for everything at any time or any place (1Tim. 5:17; Phil. 4:6-7; 1Tim. 2:8)
16 Rejoice always, 17 pray without ceasing, 18 give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. (1Thes. 5:16-18)
6 do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. (Phil. 4:6-7)
I desire then that in every place the men should pray, lifting holy hands without anger or quarreling; (1Tim. 2:8)
- The prayer taught by Lord Jesus (Mat. 6:5-13)
9 Pray then like this: “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. 10 Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. 11 Give us this day our daily bread, 12 and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. 13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. (Mat. 6:9-13)
- Prayer is not a show for man (so don’t focus on eloquent words), but a plea to heavenly Father alone.
- It depends not on human efforts but our trust in heavenly Father
- It focuses on heavenly Father first – His name, His kingdom and His will
- It also covers our daily needs, our relationship with others, and the temptation and attack of enemy
- In the end we recognize His kingdom, power and glory
