Lord’s Day Message: 1 John 4
- Knowing the spirits (1-6)
- To discern – the Spirit from God or the spirit of the antichrist, the Spirit of truth or the spirit of error
- To test – does the spirit confess that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh (acknowledging God’s salvation)
- The assurance and experience of the Spirit
a. Who is in us is greater than he who is in the world
b. We are of God (or from God), we know God and we listen to apostles
- God is love (7-21)
- The source of love (7-8)
a. Love is from God
b. Whoever loves has been born of God and knows God
2. The manifestation of love – God sent His only Son into the world to be the propitiation for our sin (9-10)
3. The living of love – the mutual abiding of God and man (11-16)
a. To love one another (12)
b. God has sent us His Spirit (13)
c. To confess that Jesus is the Son of God (15)
d. To abide in love (16)
4. Love is perfected within us
a. To know God and the accomplishment of God’s salvation (7, 9-10)
b. To love on another (12)
c. To come to know and to believe God’s love and abide in love (16-17)
d. To learn to live out the Lord – as He is so also are we in the world (17)
e. To let love cast out our fear (18)
5. Conclusion
a. He who does not love his brother cannot love God
b. God’s commandment – love God and love brothers
2 By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, … 4 Little children, you are from God and have overcome them, for he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world. (ESV)
7 Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God.
9 In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him. 10 In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.
12 No one has ever seen God; if we love one another, God abides in us and his love is perfected in us.
16 So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him. 17 By this is love perfected with us, so that we may have confidence for the day of judgment, because as he is so also are we in this world. 18 There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love. 19 We love because he first loved us.
