Lord’s Day Message: 1 John 1
- To stay in the fellowship – solving the problem of sin (1-2)
- The cleansing of the blood of Jesus, our confessing and forgiveness of God (1:7-10)
- Our attitude – not to sin (2:1)
- The salvation of the Lord – becoming our advocate (2)
1 My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. 2 He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world. (ESV)
- To keep in the fellowship (3-11)
- Keeping the commandments of the Lord to know Him (3-4)
- Keeping the word of the Lord to let the love of God be perfected in our heart (5-6)
- Loving brothers (7-11)
a. A old commandment and also a new commandment
b. It is true to the Lord and also to us
c. To prove that we are (abide) in the light
10 Whoever loves his brother abides in the light, and in him there is no cause for stumbling. 11 But whoever hates his brother is in the darkness and walks in the darkness, and does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded his eyes.
- The teaching for the church life (12-17)
- The identity of all believers and the description (12)
- The identity of believers with a different measure of life and their description (13-14)
- Exhortation: do not love the world and the things in the world (15-17)
a. Because loving the world make us lose the heart to love God
b. The definitions of the things of the world
c. Because the world and its lusts are temporal
15 Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world–the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride in possessions–is not from the Father but is from the world. 17 And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.
