Lord’s Day Message: 2 Peter 3 –               The coming of the Lord

A. Concerning the coming of the Lord (1:16-18, 3:1-13)

  1. The appearance and presence of the glorious Lord (1:16-18)
  2. The preparation of the heart

a. Stirring up the sincere mind (1)
b. Remembering the predictions of the prophets and the commandment of the Lord and Savior (2)
c. There are scoffers who deny His coming (3-5)

3.  The Acts of God

a. The existing, judgment and keeping are all through the word of God (5-7)
b. The judgment of God (7, 10, 12)
c. The patience of God (8-9)

For we did not follow cleverly devised myths when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty. For when he received honor and glory from God the Father, and the voice was borne to him by the Majestic Glory, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased,” we ourselves heard this very voice borne from heaven, for we were with him on the holy mountain.   (1:16-18)

The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.  (3:9)

  1. The living of hoping the Lord’s coming – Holiness, Godliness, and hope

Since all these things are thus to be dissolved, what sort of people ought you to be in lives of holiness and godliness, waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be set on fire and dissolved, and the heavenly bodies will melt as they burn! But according to his promise we are waiting for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells. (3:11-13)

B.  The last exhortation (14-18)

  1. Being diligent to be found by Him (14)

Therefore, beloved, since you are waiting for these, be diligent to be found by him without spot or blemish, and at peace. (3:14)

  1. Counting the patience of the Lord as salvation (15)

And count the patience of our Lord as salvation, (3:15a)

  1. Not twisting the Scriptures (16-17)
  2. Growing in the grace and knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ (18)

But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.  (18)
