Lord’s Day Message: Peter – his experience of salvation
- The theme of Peter’s epistles: the understanding and experience of salvation (1 Pet. 1:5, 9)
Who by God’s power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. (1 Pet. 1:5)
- Peter’s experience of salvation
- Knowing the Lord in the beginning
a. Change his name (Jhn. 1:40-42)
He brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “So you are Simon the son of John? You shall be called Cephas” (which means Peter). (Jhn. 1:42)
b. Truly meeting with the Lord (Luk. 5:3-11)
But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord.” (Luk. 5:8)
- Learning while following the Lord
a. Believe and doubt (Mat. 14:25-33)
And Peter answered him, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” He said, “Come.” So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, “Lord, save me.” Jesus immediately reached out his hand and took hold of him, saying to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” (Mat. 14:28-31)
b. Affirmation and Critique (Mat. 16:15-19, 21-25)
Simon Peter replied, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” And Jesus answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven.”
From that time Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised. And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him, saying, “Far be it from you, Lord! This shall never happen to you.” But he turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a hindrance to me. For you are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of man.” (Mat. 16:16-17, 21-23)
c. Only Christ (Mat. 17:1-8)
And Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good that we are here. If you wish, I will make three tents here, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah.” He was still speaking when, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him.” … And when they lifted up their eyes, they saw no one but Jesus only. (Mat. 17:4-5, 8)
- The deep lessons before ministering
a. Restored from his biggest fall (Mat. 10:32-33; Luk. 22:31-34, 61-62; Mak. 16:7)
“Simon, Simon, behold, Satan demanded to have you, that he might sift you like wheat, but I have prayed for you that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned again, strengthen your brothers.” Peter said to him, “Lord, I am ready to go with you both to prison and to death.” Jesus said, “I tell you, Peter, the rooster will not crow this day, until you deny three times that you know me.” (Luk. 22:31-34)
b. Receiving the Lord’s commitment (Jhn. 21:15-19)
When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” He said to him, “Feed my lambs.” (Jhn. 21:15)
- Our experience and application of the Lord’s salvation
