Lord’s Day Message:

Titus Chapter 2

Bible Verses: (ESV)

But as for you, teach what accords with sound doctrine. 2 Older men are to be sober-minded, dignified, self-controlled, sound in faith, in love, and in steadfastness. 3 Older women likewise are to be reverent in behavior, not slanderers or slaves to much wine. They are to teach what is good, 4 and so train the young women to love their husbands and children, 5 to be self-controlled, pure, working at home, kind, and submissive to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be reviled. 6 Likewise, urge the younger men to be self-controlled. 7 Show yourself in all respects to be a model of good works, and in your teaching show integrity, dignity, 8 and sound speech that cannot be condemned, so that an opponent may be put to shame, having nothing evil to say about us. 9 Slaves are to be submissive to their own masters in everything; they are to be well-pleasing, not argumentative, 10 not pilfering, but showing all good faith, so that in everything they may adorn the doctrine of God our Savior.

11 For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, 12 training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age, 13 waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, 14 who gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for himself a people for his own possession who are zealous for good works. 15 Declare these things; exhort and rebuke with all authority. Let no one disregard you.

Message Outlines

  1. The teaching for the Christian Living (1-10)
  2. The sound doctrine (healthy teaching)

The truth we pursue must be sound /healthy, which means that it can helps us to know God and His will as well as to help us to grow and have testimony in life.

  1. The teaching for various people

Here Paul has teaching for various people.  The sound doctrine does have power to change people so that God’s words can be honored.

Paul especially emphasizes the teaching towards older people because aging should help us to know the value of life and its experiences. They should also be the pattern for the young ones to bring the whole church into a healthy situation.

  1. Some points of the teaching

Sober-minded, dignified, self-controlled: These are human characters. Sober-minded refers to the decision to live by judging what is valuable. Being dignified is a character which earns the respect from others. Self-controlled is having prudence which keeps us in a healthy situation before God.

Sound in faith, in love, and in steadfastness: To trust the Lord in our various experiences, to seek others’ best interests, and to know that God has His best will in our difficulties.

Reverent in behavior: The Greek word for “reverent” refers the things to worship God. In other words, our living is always related with God that He can be satisfied and gain glory.

  1. Grace – the power for our Christian living

“For” in verse 11 shows that the living in verses 2-10 is not according to the demanding in law but from the appearing  of God’s grace which saves us.

  1. The appearing of the grace of God which brings salvation for all people

The grace of God has appeared to us through Jesus Christ. His incarnation, human living, redemption on the cross and His resurrection, ascending and enthroning make us to regenerate, be saved, and be brought back to the presence of God. The grace and salvation are the very foundation for our belief and living.

  1. The grace trains us

Grace is not only the favor we do not deserve, or just an enjoyment of God. Grace is a power and influence that can train us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions and help us to live a life with the presence of God.
